Metallic finishes and accents have been a popular kitchen design trend for several years now, and in 2023, we see this trend continue to evolve. Metals add a sleek modern look and a touch of sophistication to any kitchen. From brass and copper to stainless steel and brushed nickel, there are a variety of metallic finishes that can be incorporated into kitchen designs. As makers of metal products for the home, we could not be more excited to see more and more people using metal finishes in the kitchen--the heart of the home. Below are some of the top trends for using metals in kitchen design in 2023.

Mixing Metals in the Kitchen

Mixing and matching different metals instantly enhances the color scheme of a kitchen, while also adding depth, texture, and interest. Bronze, stainless steel, nickel, and black are among the most popular finishes. Brass continues to be popular, but we also are seeing a shift to a gold color that’s a little less yellow. (Check out Stoll’s satin gold finish for a great alternative).

This sophisticated kitchen design trend works best when you combine metals that are similar in tone.  Balance is necessary for any good design. Consider using the rich colors of brass, gold, and copper, or consider coupling nickel and chrome for lighter surroundings. While some people may be hesitant to mix metals, with the right guidance, it can be a great way to elevate your kitchen design.

Metal or Steel Cabinetry

Cabinetry isn’t just for storage; it has a huge impact on your kitchen’s overall design. Metal cabinets can be used in a variety of ways in kitchen design. They can be used as a focal point in a modern or industrial-style kitchen, or to add a modern touch to a traditional or farmhouse-style kitchen. Metal cabinets can also be combined with other materials, such as wood or glass, to create a more eclectic look.

Stoll introduced a new cabinet design at KBIS 2023, the largest Kitchen & Bath show of the year. Designers loved this design and see it as a beautiful alternative to floating shelves. With the popularity of two-toned cabinets and the longing for more contrast in the kitchen, metal cabinet doors are a great option.

A few years ago, the photo below from Precision Cabinetry and Design went viral and continues to pop up on social media even now. Some say imitation is the greatest form of flattery.  If that’s true, this design has received more than its share of flattery!

Matte Metal Finishes

While shiny metallic finishes have been popular in the past, we see more and more customers choosing matte metal finishes in 2023. Our matte black finish is always a popular choice. Matte finishes are clean and elegant bringing a sophisticated look to the kitchen. They are also a great complement to both rich and cool-toned finishes. Consider using a matte finish for cabinet hardware, kitchen faucets, or a range hood with a metal accent.

Custom Metal Range Hoods

Custom hood vents boasting beautiful metals such as copper and brass seem to be a must-have in kitchen designs, especially with less focus on all-white kitchens and a shift to more dark and moody vibes.  Available in a variety of shapes, sizes, and finishes, custom metal range hoods can be designed to complement any kitchen design. If you prefer a wood range hood, consider adding a touch of metal with accent banding in a variety of metal finishes. The banding accents the shape of a hood while adding character to an otherwise smooth surface.

Copper and bronze range hoods are expected to grow in popularity, likely due to the shift to deeper, warmer colors being used. Copper can be paired with a variety of styles, from traditional to modern.

On the other hand, there are still many who love the brightness of white and gold--a timeless combination. There is a move from traditional gold colors to a softer finish that is satin or brushed.

Statement Lighting

Metallic light fixtures, such as brass pendant lights or a stainless steel chandelier, can make a big impact in the kitchen. Statement lighting is another great way to introduce a metallic finish into your design.

The Metallic Kitchen Design Trend

Overall, metallic finishes and accents are a versatile kitchen design trend that can be incorporated in a variety of ways to create a modern and sophisticated look in the kitchen. There is also a movement towards natural and durable materials that can stand the test of time. Metal certainly meets those requirements! Whether you choose to mix and match different metals, display a luxurious chandelier, or center your design around a custom metal range hood, incorporating metallic finishes into your kitchen design can add a touch of luxury and shine that is sure to impress your guests.
